Whenever I’m talking to my neighbors, and they say something crazy — like:
Yeah, well, I used to be a pirate in high school…
Hey, if he needs to drink like that sometimes, that’s his business, but I’m just hanging, too, so I respond with this:
Pfft…African-American, Please!
There always follows a frozen moment in time–a moment of real confusion and tension. The variously pigmented people are all frozen and simultaneously wondering:
Wait, should I be offended by that???
Then everyone laughs. My one friend laughed so hard he thought he would vomit, and laughter makes hatred impossible.
You see, sometimes two races come together and realize that words are fun and silly, and every word can communicate whatever emotion we want it to, when used in the right context. Words are only hurtful when used to hurt.
New Grammar Rule: There are no ugly words.
There’s only ugly word usage.
